Ruta Korshunova (b. 1974) is an artist working across painting, artist’s books, and various forms of object-based art. Her interest in images and making things has been a constant throughout her life, developing alongside many years of professional work in fields connected with visual culture — printing, advertising, design, and digital media. Another long-standing area of interest has been interior creation, working with space, and hands-on experience in building and shaping living environments.
Oil remains Ruta’s primary painting medium. Her attention is drawn to the world of objects, everyday things, space, and the possibility of discovering inner tension, stillness, or unexpected beauty within an ordinary motif. Painting exists alongside an enduring interest in material objects, handwork, and the process of making itself.
Artist’s books form a distinct part of her artistic practice. Within the RUTABOOK project, Ruta made paper and book structures by hand, worked with artist’s books, and curated international exhibition projects. During the same period, mail art also became part of her practice. Her interest in the book as an independent art object brings together image, material, text, and the physical structure of the book itself.
The same inclination toward working with material form can be seen in her mirrors, furniture, sculptures, masks, dolls, headpieces, and costumes. Different techniques and materials become different ways of working with image, object, and space. Rather than provocative gestures or manifestos, her work is guided by a desire to transform the surrounding environment and to find and create beauty, playfulness, and harmony within everyday life. Ruta Korshunova lives and works in Ukraine. Her painting and book projects have been exhibited in Ukraine and internationally. Her works are held in private collections in a number of countries.
